Mid, high and low are consonant classes. A syllable’s tone depends on its starting class, vowel length, ending and tone mark.
Nine letters in the mid class. The class is one part of working out a syllable’s tone.
Eleven high-class letters. Listen to the full letter name, then compare the initial and final sounds.
Twenty-four low-class letters. Different letters can share a sound while belonging to different classes.
Vowel signs can sit before, after, above or below a consonant. The dotted circle shows where the consonant goes. This chart also includes the rare vocalic forms.
